Nine teams competed at the 5th Annual Chief Joseph Days Ranch Rodeo

Nine teams competed at the 5th Annual Chief Joseph Days Ranch Rodeo, Saturday, June 30, at the Harley Tucker Memorial Rodeo Grounds in Joseph under perfect weather conditions.

Team roping, team penning, team branding and steer ribbon roping were on the list for the team competition. The bronc riding event finished off the evening with an open jackpot competition.

The Yost family who showed up with two teams, the Yost Ranch and Yost Quarter Horse team, was in fine form that Saturday evening with both teams finishing in the top two spots.

The Yost Ranch team, comprised of Megan Yost, Jerry Cobb, and Jim Hite, took first at the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo Grounds with 130 points. The team won three of the four team events.

Tied for fourth were the Marr Flat Cattle Co., Todd and Adele Nash and Buck Matthews, and the Circle P Ranch, Lowell and Trevor Lewis and John Harris, with 31 points a piece.

For the first time this year, the ranch saddle bronc riding did not count toward team points, but was an open  jack pot event. Three of the five participants riding came from the teams, two were independent riders all in hopes of  a full eight second ride.

George Kohlhepp, won first place with a 74 point ride; Chris Patrick was second with 68, and Randy Baremore came in third with 64 points.

The stick horse race for the Peewee cowboys and cowgirls also entertained the big crowd during the event.

The rodeo weekend started with a trail ride on the east moraine of  Wallowa Lake followed by dinner and auction at the Thunder Room Friday night. Saturday afternoon participants rode through Joseph to the rodeo grounds for the start of the team events.

The Ranch Rodeo that is leading up to the 67th Annual Chief Joseph Days Rodeo has been a successful scholarship fundraiser for the last four years. This annual event not only raises money to award college scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Wallowa County, it gets everyone in the spirit for Chief Joseph Days, July 25 through 28.
